Silesian Museum is an award-winning museum in Katowice, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. It was founded in 1929 by the Silesian Parliament, while the region was recovering from the Silesian Uprisings. 

Along with the relocation of the Silesian Museum to its new seat, the idea was born to create not only a new mobile application, but to actually develop an entire management system for the app and the museum's special interactive information kiosks.

Challenge

The management of the museum came up with the idea of creating a few digital solutions to help tourists enjoy their visit in the venue. These included: a mobile app and entirely new content management system  with an API integrating with the museum's special interactive information kiosks and the app.

 

The app, along with interactive kiosks:

  • serve as a guide to the new premises of the Silesian Museum
  • help to navigate the Museum grounds, using beacons, WiFi and Bluetooth
  • represent a minimalist interface, colours and typography to provide the user with quick and convenient access to information about events and current exhibitions
  • are friendly to disabled users

 

The information displayed in the app is updated using a special content management system (CMS), based on our proprietary backend solutions.

    Project’s scope

    The first task was to create a suitable backend and content management system (CMS). This involved developing iOS and Android apps including, among others, reliable location services for the premises. To achieve this, we had to install a number of beacons, deployed in relevant locations, as well as configure and calibrate them to ensure precise navigation on museum grounds. This has been one of the largest beacon implementation projects in Poland at this time, and in fact in Europe. The project involved placing the beacons inside the Silesian Museum. 

    We have integrated the developed CMS with interactive kiosks and with the mobile app. To do that, we had to create a tailor-made API that allows these devices to connect to the system and download data. Last, but not least, we trained museum staff in using the CMS and administrators from the server back-office management.

    Creation of designs for the mobile app and then for the museum’s kiosks was also on our side. We based on a design system provided by Blank Studio.
